Don’t Forget Me will premiere Saturday, March 9 from 4-6 p.m., in Film Row Cinema on the 8th floor of 1104 S. Wabash Ave. There is a $5 entry fee for the public. The film will be presented in a lower audio-decibel, and a sensory break-room will be available to accommodate autistic individuals.
Communication Associate Professor Curtis Lawrence will moderate a discussion following the film with Spinner; Zoubida Pasha, a Chicago disability advocate from Morocco whose daughter is autistic; and Camille Proctor, the executive director of The Color of Autism Foundation.
Don't Forget Me wins Mike Covell Award at Big Muddy

Jackie Spinner, award-winning journalist and SIU alumna is the winner of the 2019 Mike Covell Award for her film “Don’t Forget Me." The Covell Award honors an SIU Carbondale alumnus whose film shows passion, engagement and original perspective. Covell, who retired in 2007, began the film festival in 1979 after his arrival on campus in 1975 after finishing graduate school at Ohio University.
‘Don’t Forget Me’ Film Reminds Morocco of its Children with Autism

“Don’t Forget Me” depicts the challenges that Moroccan parents and their children with autism have to deal with in a society that is not yet equipped to handle autism. In 28 minutes, the documentary will showcase the different facets of autism and the discrimination children experience, denying them the right to receive education at school like their peers without disabilities.

Don’t Forget Me will have its world premiere on Nov. 17 at the Rabat International Film Festival, which is being held at Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Executive Producer Jackie Spinner and Director Rajae Bouardi will attend.
What My Sons and I Gained From Returning to Morocco

We had come to Morocco so that I could report from the county and produce a documentary on autism during my first sabbatical as a newly tenured professor. Both of my sons are autistic, and as they’ve grown in America, with access to government-funded therapy and intervention, I have been acutely and painfully aware of how different their lives would have been if they had stayed in Morocco.
